I hate how well my husband understands me

You know how I mentioned I was knitting a hat for Jack? It was supposed to have stripes? Yeah, well. When I was packing my carry-on bag I just stuck two balls of wool in there, figuring that would be enough. And it was! Just not enough for what I'd envisioned. I was basically making shit up as I went along anyway, so I figured I could take a few liberties with the stripe thing. First I made some little boxes going around, which suddenly looked like windows! So then I made little peaked roofs over them! And I had a little neighborhood. Which gave me leave to fill in the top of the hat with a blue night sky and a few little oatmeal-colored stars. And voila! The Starry Nightcap!

starry nightcap

Except for it being sort of flat on top, like a soup pot, and big enough for a -- a person with a REALLY BIG HEAD.

Me: "I finished your hat!"

Jack: "Good! How's it look?"

Me: "Well, it's a little . . ."

Jack: "Of course it is. I'd expect no less of you."

I'm very impressed by your hat-making skills.

The blue is so pretty!

That is a spectacular hat. I also have a large head and an abnormal amount of hair so I can really appreciate a hat that is slightly on the big side.

Laughing at Kyran's rainman comment. Totally impressed by all knitters as I have multiple thumbs and two left hands and can only crochet.

I'm very impressed with your improvised counting skills... I try, but it seems I can't count.

It's adorable. Kinda acorn-like. You know, for the wood-sprite in Jack.

Haha! All my hats turn out a little...too. Either wool shower cap-shaped or yarmulkes or Muslim prayer hats. sigh!

Anyway, it's an adorable hat! I love the starry night pattern.

That hat is wicked cool.

If it has a high enough natural fiber count, you could felt it - I think it would come quite nicely if felted.

Oops, I realized that I just made it sound as if your hat would totally get it rocks off if felted. Dirty hat!

I meant to say "come OUT quite nicely".

Hey, at least it can be identified as a hat. That's more than I could do...

Love the hat! So cute, and I actually like that shape, I think it is especially perfect for young children (even if the only children that one would fit would be my melon-headed kids!)
I am always in awe of people who knit, I am a crochet only girl.

Cagey, it's true, many things come quite well if felted.

Very tasteful, and just in time for 'winter' too. Should go nice with his bikini.

#1 daughter wants to know why most people who knit/crochet hats design them so the wearer looks like he/she is wearing a mushroom.

But mushrooms are delicious! Moreso than this hat. Although I like the idea of putting lots and lots of hair underneath. I will have to let mine keep growing. I do not know how to felt something, nor how to make a decent joke out of that. I now have a hat calculator, though!

Send it this way! I have a giant head and five tons of hair. I've yet to meet the hat that can tame me.

i mourn the fact that i don't have someone to make me a hat like that. I have been shopping all over chilly Chicago looking for something to fit my enormous head and have found nothing that does not leave me imprints on my forehead.

If it wasn't such a labor of love, i'd ask you to make me one.

It's beautiful.

Love the improvisation of homes all tucked into a neighborhood under a starry sky - knitted into a hat while you spend time in the house you grew up in, tending to your family. It's beautiful, and perfect for right now. Great job, and it looks adorable on you. (You're about 8 years old right there.)

I'm jealous. My first knitting effort was supposed to be a hat for my husband and it's, like, rodent-sized. I have a pea-head, and it pinches my brains.
