Grandma Susan was here to visit last week so we did what any self-respecting hosts who live a mile from the beach would do. We drove thirty miles to Costco! Susan had forgotten to bring her camera so she thought she’d buy a new one, download the pictures when she got back home, and then send the new, redundant camera to me as an early Christmas present.
Unfortunately, our Costco was not selling the exact same model of camera that Connecticut Costco sells. Astonishingly, our Costcos are ever so slightly misaligned in their otherwise-exact-sameness. So then we thought, “What the hell, as long as we’re here let’s just have a little walk around!” And soon our arms were loaded with loaves of bread and jugs of wine and thou. We ended up spending eleventy-million dollars on, I don’t know what, beef jerky. Dried blueberries. Salsa-flavored rice chips.
Only then did we feel we’d bought enough crap to earn the right to shrug off the heavy wet cloak of food-based consumerism, and so we took to the beach to comb for some decidedly more aesthetic bits of crap.
Behold, a mere portion of our bounty! Sea glass, sea pottery, and the rare and underappreciated sea brick. Tomorrow I’m going to throw my Costco membership card into the ocean and see if in a couple years’ time it washes back up in some unexpectedly useful and/or decorative condition. One can only hope.
Peewee appears to be allergic to whatever the hell is blooming around here, it could be anything, we are up to our necks in flora. I have three colors of sweetpea jammed into a vase next to me and they smell better than — I don’t know what. Mike Nichols’ toupee? A Rose Bowl queen? Five hundred bucks? To be honest, the smell reminds me of my mother’s flowerbed when I was nine years old and it was my job to keep the petunias and snapdragons and the lily of the valley watered. Despite my recent record of killing nearly every plant I get my hands on, I did a pretty good job as a kid. I think I was more focused then.

That sea glass is awesome. Wanna trade?
I think focus ages you.
Doggies!!!
Sea plastic!
You’ll want to toss more cards in, just in case yours goes missing. Just throw in a couple armloads of plastic crap, something’s BOUND to erode close to shore.
Just de-lurking to say– “and thou”– hilarious. Totally made my day. So thank you for that.
I think you were much more successful at the shore than Costco… However, next time you’re hungry the lovely sea glass probably won’t look as good as the Costco bounty.
Peewee doesn’t seem to miss…(*whisper*), his balls.
That beach brick looks a lot like a dog biscuit I once bought.
This could explain why my dog has so few teeth these days.
Ummm….I’m kind of in love with your dogs – they’re beyond adorable.
FWIW, as a bulldog owner myself (and a bulldog with seasonal allergies, at that), you can get him a shot – but it will be two solid weeks of the “puppy schedule” – he’ll have to pee every two hours. It’s awful.
It is safe, however, to give your Pee Wee Benadryl. My bullie weighs a little under 50 lbs (he’s small-ish for a male), and we give him one twice a day. It helps dramatically. If he won’t take pills, try the children’s version.
I hope that helps.
As a fairly regular lurker and a first-time commenter, I have to say that I love your writing and I love your photos.
Pretty stuff and cute pups. And didn’t you learn your lesson about Costco last time with the cheesecake?
I know! Seriously, the card’s going into the ocean TODAY. SORRY, ENVIRONMENT, IT’S BETTER FOR YOU IN THE LONG RUN IF I DO THAT.
Ha! I hadn’t thought of it that way! YOU’RE RIGHT! I’m going to mail you my Costco card and my Ulta savings card.
I’m trying to figure out a way to justify throwing my gym membership card into the ocean, too.
I never find cool stuff like that in MY ocean. Generally, i find dead jellyfish and slimy seaweed; alas, none of those are worth collecting and bringing home.
I hated giving my dog steroids for her allergies, but my vet recommended giving her the generic of Chloratrimeton, these little yellow pills. She takes 1 four or eight oz pill twice a day. It seems to be working well, apparently because those doggies get immune to benedryl after a couple of doses.
Those salsa rice chips are sooo delicious. Try with hummus!
The kid thing. I can’t figure this out. As a kid, I could do things like SEW. I made dinner for my family of 6 many times. I used to take care of a 5 year old and a 1 year old and then have dinner ready. I remember in my Freshman year, I sat down at lunch I memorized every single book of the Bible (for a test after lunch, not for fun). HOW? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO ME? I can’t even boil water now.
Drugs? Was it really true they were bad for you? Does this explain it all.
Argh! Costco. Yuck.
Speaking of which have you tried their Estancia wine? Or the garlic bread. Holy Shit.
Holy shit in a good way?
And HA! Ozma.
Love the sea pottery! And sea brick cracked me up.
Love your writing. : )
Those doggies are seriously precious. Srsly.
Also… I can’t figure out how to leave my info on this comment form because I don’t use Blogger or anything else in the list and it won’t let me just leave my URL! So hi, I’m Lauren and my blog is http://www.urbanana.net and I think your blog is cool.
Holy Shit in the best possible way.
It had a rant, rant, rave kind of beat to it.
Noo, nooo, not the ocean! The problem there is bad enough!

But I am all for dumping those cards SOMEWHERE!
Perhaps if you put your Costco card in a bottle and write beautiful poetry about blueberries and rice chips to accompany the card…??

Your beach is awesome. Mine just yields condoms and sporks.
I appreciate sea brick. Love sea brick… wish I had some.
My better half has been forgiven many, many transgressions for once telling me, when I was sweaty and disgusting, that I “smelt better than heaven on a good day”.
I’d be pleased to loan you this simile with reference to your sweet peas.
I think my favourite Costco quote (I’m ripping someone off here, I just can’t remember who) was the lady who said people over 80 shouldn’t be allowed to shop at Costco, because – don’t go in there – you’ll never finish anything!!
ok…i have to admit that i had to google sea glass. i first heard the term on hannah montanna (admitting that i have watched that show on more than one occasion…i have an 8 year old…ok…now that confession is over i’ll continue)and was curious about it then. and now after seeing your pictures i had to find out what sea glass actually was. facinating…really. i had no idea. i think i need some!
I love sea glass! I have only ever found one small, blessed piece. On the shore of lovely Bowen Island, just off of Vancouver, B.C.’s mainland. I love to imagine where it started out and what it’s been through. I think people are like sea glass, some with sharper edges, some with their edges worn down by experience.
I’m in Pasadena, it’s raining and my flight is delayed 2 hours. What up with that, Mrs. K?
On Catalina Island they call sea glass “mermaid tears” and it’s a popular souvenir item. I love them!
Those dogs are so utterly kissable.
I’ll trade you one ex husband for three of your rocks…
Catherine
Like the ex would be worth it!
I have a jar of sweet peas too and they smell….like childhood. You need any Spanish shells or beach glass just let me know.
So help me Eden, if that Costco card happens to wash up on the shores of Lake Erie and I am unfortunate enough to find it, I will hunt you down and give it right the hell back. I do NOT need any more 840 oz. boxes of Grape Nuts.
Crap. Just saw your tweet about the $100 vet bill for a sneezing dog that got fixed with Benadryl. My puppy has been sneezing all morning and I have an appointment for him in a half hour!
We’re having bulldog issues this season to, but it’s mostly manifesting as hyperactivity and urination on the living room floor. Let me know if you ever want to trade.
your bullies are so damn cute! I have a soft spot for them. I think I have what hey have.
