Or maybe he’s mad because they’re out of beer again.

The night we got back from Disneyland I picked up some sushi for dinner, which is our don’t-ask-how-much-it-costs-just-get-some-sake-in-the-freezer-STAT default on nights no one wants to cook. Actually, Jackson would have made dinner but then we would have been eating peanuts and salami, mmmmm. At Sushi Teri the TV over the bar was tuned to that Spanish-language show with the guy in the bug costume on it. (He’s never a bee anymore, why is that? Now he’s like some bobbley-headed superbug.) And tonight he was up against a guy in classic Frankenstein drag, except that the moment I took this picture Frankenstein was all, “What do you mean you didn’t record 30 Rock for me last night?!”

  • Chapulin Colorado. Classic! Did he ever wear a bee costume? I know his satirical counterpart on The Simpsons does but I think he’s always had the red get-up hence his surname colorado which is “red.” Except not the color but more like the hue. I know it’s confusing. Even to me and Spanish was my first language. Oh, why do I even bother? I should have stopped at Classic!

  • I’m so glad you said that, I have no idea about the bee costume, I have long assumed that all post-Belushi and Simpsons-era Mexican television bugs HAD to be bees. This is the problem with learning about other cultures just from TV parodies.

  • At the music festival I missed to go to San Francisco, my mate Dan went as The Bee, inspired by these very Spanish-language light-entertainment shows. It was the one photo of the weekend that had me falling about.

  • I had heard somewhere that the Simpsons Bumblebee Man was a take off of the red grasshopper from the show that ninotchka mentioned.

I also have the bee thing stuck in my head from that Blind Melon song with the girl in the costume. Go 90s!

  • Kind of funny that they have a spanish speaking tv channel on in a sushi place.

  • OH MY GOD El Chapulin Colorado!!! This was one of my FAVORITE shows growing up. The Simpsons bee guy is definitely a take-off of this guy, makes me laugh every time. I once was out on 6th street in Austin, TX on Halloween and saw not one but TWO guys dressed as El Chapulin. Awesomeness. Siguan me los buenos!
