These are Chinstrap Penguins from the Santa Barbara Zoo. We once ran into a docent who told us that another name for them was Ass Penguins because when they vocalize they sound like little braying donkeys. Which reminds me, did you read about Jesse Thorn‘s wedding in the New York Times yesterday, and how they wanted to have miniature donkeys wandering around the reception? And that miniature donkeys are also known as “donks“?! (Warning: cuteness ahoy if you click on that. Eeeee!)

i was so disappointed for Jesse that he could not have those cute little donks roaming around. Odd desire, in a charming sort of way, no?

Huh. I’ve heard them called Jackass Penguins, but never Ass Penguins. That makes it sound as though they’d be sort of pink and rotund.
The Baltimore Zoo has a big colony of them, including a gay couple who has raised orphan chicks together. Awww.
Oh, my boys would love to listen to that docent!
