My mind has been occupied with other things lately, though nothing I’d care to share at the moment. I’m back in Denver, on my four-month rotation through Camp Mom. I was amazed at how little there was to eat when I arrived. They survive on fast food, so I turned right back around again and came back with seven bags of groceries.
Every day my mom eats . . .
Breakfast: One banana, sliced, in a bowl with skim milk
Lunch: One McDonald’s hamburger and one peanut butter cookie
Dinner: One McDonald’s hamburger and one peanut butter cookie
I used to come out here and start cooking up a storm and forcing vegetables on everyone, but we all came to see that does nothing but cause an uprising in the collective digestive tract. And the hospice people just keep saying: give her what she wants.
(Tonight it was two pieces of sour cream blueberry meringue pie.)

Seriously, it costs less than $4.00 a day to feed her. I can’t imagine what they’d charge if she were in a nursing home.
Bless your sweet mom’s l’il heart, Eden. And yours, too. I’m sending most and best thoughts and well wishes as befits a not-too-creepy caring internet friend.
…and I can certainly understand why it’s important not to upheave any digestive tracts. McDonald’s it is!
Good luck with everything.
I’m a pretty new reader so I don’t “know” you very well yet, but I have lost a parent.
I vote stick with the McDonald’s if it makes her happy.
Hospice is amazing and they helped us so much through my stepdad’s time (July). Your mom’s body just knows. My dad wanted rice pudding and hot pockets. Where’s the nutrition in that?!? But he wasn’t having anything else.
Sending happy thoughts and white light to you.
Hospice is awesome. Their recommendations are usually spot-on and yes, if she wants McD’s then let her have it. We did the same with my grandmother when she was under hospice care.
Who wouldn’t want two pieces of pie?
Sour cream blueberry meringue sounds wonderful! I want two pieces too!
For heaven’s sakes let her have all the cigarettes and booze she wants too. When i’m old, i’m going to take all of that up again. Just watch what happens to anyone who tries to stop me.
Our thoughts are with you and your Mom. And let her have all the McDonald’s she wants. Calories are the key thing at this point. And personal happiness. When I visit my 96 year old great Aunt, I take her to the Hard Rock cafe for a chocolate milkshake TWICE A DAY. Otherwise she hardly eats anything. If she wanted double Scotches, I’d say yes to that, too.
I am a firm believer in the healing power of desserts. My Nana lived on milkshakes and cookies the last month of her life and was happy.
Happy thoughts to you. You are giving an amazing gift.
It is always a good idea to give a hospice patient what she wants. And, as I am sure the hospice people have told you more than once, take care of yourself, too. (I know it’s hard to leave the side of someone you have limited time with, but do it anyway.)
my mom also enjoyed the Happy Meal toy, along with her burger. I have fond memories of those days. I lost her 10 years ago. I still love a happy meal toy.
Amen. If she wants those burgers…well, what the hey! If I could bake worth a crap, I’d send her dozens and dozens of cookies. And, I send you some pretty, red shoes. Just for the heck of it.
oh this brings back memories of me taking care of my mom several years ago. she was very young 47.
i just want to say my thoughts are with you. please be kind to yourself. i know it’s not an easy task. what you are doing is brave and requires so much of your spirit.
hugs to you.
meesh
Sending you love, Eden.
Hospice is awesome. My dad is in the end stages of prostate cancer, and still at home. The other day, he had a craving for Burger King. He ate more of his whopper jr. and onion rings than of anything we’ve made all month. And if I could get the booze past my mom, he’d have that too.
So bring on the burgers and pie. Sending good thoughts to you and your family.
Blueberry + sour cream + meringue + the word “Pie”. Excuse me, I have something I need to google…..
